Moominworld, Naantali Island

After finishing placement last week we headed to West Finland to go see Moominworld!  Moominworld is on an island beside Naantali and easily accessed from Turku, the former Finnish capital.  What an amazing place - Malika and Ameenah loved it and I really struggled to get them to leave....We were the last stragglers to leave and missed the toy train back into town...We were only in Moominworld for one day but two would have been much better as there is so much to do and so many Moomins to hug...

Who drew Moomintroll?
The basis for the Moomin World is basically one woman's life's work: the Finnish-Swedish author and illustrator Tove Jansson created the Moomin characters in her books, the first of which (The Moomins and the Great Flood) was published in 1945.

Tove Jansson (1914–2001) was a specially gifted multi-talented person who fulfilled herself on a grand scale. She was an author, painter, cartoonist and caricaturist, as well as a doctor of philosophy. The productive Jansson achieved success when her third Moomin book (Finn Family Moomintroll, 1948) made an international breakthrough.

Nowadays Tove Jansson is the most translated Finnish author of all time; her works can be read in over 30 languages. As well as Moomins, Tove Janssen wrote about other subjects, too, concentrating more and more on adult books in her later years.

Tove Jansson's works have touched people regardless of age, time and place. When Yleisradio organised the Great Finns poll in 2004, Jansson was placed 19th. Every Finn taller than a grasshopper knows the Moomins, but in Japan the characters are even more popular. There the Moomins have risen to a phenomena which is followed all the way to Finland, even to get married – and where else than in the Moomin World Moomin House.

The park's aim is to implement Moomin philosophy: family unity, non-violence, friendliness, environmental awareness, safety and adventure, as well as values promoting parenting.

Bring a swim suit, Moomin World has a lovely beach. Whatever the weather, bring equipment suitable for the weather. Moomins love outdoor life, in rain and shine!
